Every athletics track project reaches the same fork early on: do you buy a surface manufactured in a factory and rolled out on site, or do you buy liquid components mixed and poured in place? The answer shapes your budget, your programme, your weather risk, and how the track looks in year eight.
We manufacture both, so this comparison is not a sales pitch for one system. It is the same explanation we give consultants and contractors before we quote.
What the two systems actually are
Prefabricated rubber track is vulcanised in a factory as continuous rolls, typically 1.22 m wide, in a fixed thickness. The rolls arrive cured and finished. Installation is a bonding operation: prepare the base, apply adhesive, lay the rolls, seam them, mark the lines.
Cast-in-place (poured-in-place) PU track arrives as liquid polyurethane components and rubber granules. The system is mixed and applied on site in layers, then cured in the open air. The surface takes its final form on your base, in your climate, under your site conditions.
The comparison that matters

When prefabricated is the better call
- You cannot supervise the site closely. The most important quality decisions were already made in the factory. What can go wrong on site is bonding and seaming, not the surface itself.
- Your programme is tight. No inter-layer curing means a much shorter window between base handover and first use.
- The climate is against you. In Gulf summer heat or a Southeast Asian monsoon season, a poured system’s curing window is a real schedule risk. A prefabricated roll only needs the base dry.
- You are buying across borders. You can test a physical sample of exactly what will be installed, before you pay the balance.
When cast-in-place is the better call
- The base is imperfect and you cannot rebuild it. A poured system can be built up to correct minor level and fall problems that would telegraph straight through a roll.
- You want a seamless surface, for aesthetic reasons or because the venue’s maintenance regime is weak.
- The geometry is unusual — complex infield shapes and non-standard run-ups are easier to pour than to cut and seam.
- Local installation expertise is strong and you can supervise mixing on site.
The factor most tenders ignore: climate
Specification documents are usually copied between projects and rarely account for where the track will actually live. Two questions are worth asking before you fix the system:
How hot does the surface get? Dark surfaces in Gulf conditions reach temperatures far above ambient. UV stability and thermal behaviour matter more here than in temperate markets — ask for QUV ageing test results, not just a certificate number.
How long is your dry window? If your installation season overlaps with a monsoon, a system that needs consecutive dry curing days is a programme risk you are carrying, not the supplier.
Five questions to put to any supplier
- What thickness, and is it the same across the whole track? Ask for the tolerance in millimetres.
- Which certificate covers this exact system — product or facility? (They are different things. Here is how to tell them apart.)
- What base flatness do you require, and who is responsible if it is not met?
- What is the seam detail, and what is the warranty on seams specifically?
- Can you provide a physical sample of the production batch, not a showroom sample?
